How To Write
Starting off with making it clear that I am not an expert, I didn't even finish school. I however do love writing and think it's very important to learn. Not learn as in "perfect grammar and spelling", but to learn to express yourself and enjoy.
School often makes writing seem like a chore. We might need to study for something or present something, that requires writing. But writing isn't just a tool for other things to get done. It's it's own creative way of expression and one that I think more people should try.
Why I write
I already touched on the subject of self expression, but I want to emphesise the point. This is something I think should be taught in school actually. Don't waste pre-school art classes on things like memorising old artists names, colour theories, or music classes for reading sheet music. All of that will come natrually if you instead teach to love creating. I believe the world would be a better place if everyonehad a fair chance to learn how to express themselves. It could be with words, colors, music, anything as long as we teached how to handle emotions, understand and express.
What to Write?
This might be the biggest reason people don't write, because they don't know what to say. You don't have to say anything, just take a pen and paper and sit in front of it. If nothing comes to mind by then, write the current date and a smiley. Is that smiley happy, sad, hungry, neutrual? Write why that smiley feels how it feels. It doesn't have to be deep, this smiley isn't you and doesn't have to represent you. When you've decided why the smiley felt like it felt, draw a new smiley. Do the same for that one. And when you're ready, you can try to make a smiley that can represent you. I feel like this is a great way to start and once you've done it a couple of times, writing may come natrually when you want it.
Idea Vault
If you're having a hard time finding what to write, here are some ideas that could help my own creativity spark.
- Guide or tutorial about something you love
- Convincing the reader about something youre passionate about
- Fake letter to someone you know, a celebraty, a fictional character, your pet, anyone
- A letter to yourself, past self and future self
- Topic favourite animal, colour, artist, soccer team, anything
- A reflection on a specific date like today, this year or month
Mixing creative outlets
What if you're already a writer? You can mix writing with drawing, scrap booking, music, literally anything and it'll be a new fun experience. Personally, I made this website to mix web design and writing. There are infinate ways to use writing and it doesn't have to be deep life philosophies or anything like that. Write a song about a blue car passing by, or a poem that rhymes with "word". Mix it with your favourite hobby, write about your favourite soccer player or about your pet.
Share your writing
No one needs to see your writings if you don't want them to. You can delete them once youre finished if youre on a computer or you can throw them away if you are using paper. The important thing isn't the outcome. But sharing it can often feel rewarding if you find people who are intrested in your works and I personally love sharing my less personal writings. It can also help others reflect on things they might've never thought about before.
